Totaled the cav last night.. need advice
Wednesday, April 15, 2009 11:53 AM
To make a series of unfortunate events and a couple very long stories short.. I @!#$ up last night and "totaled" my car.
I hopped a curb and then decided to cut my loses and go for the tree head on. Hit it dead center and put a nice oval in the front of my car.
After getting slammed with tickets I got it towed to a shop and they declared it totaled without telling me why.

I asked several times what they assessed and how much each part would be. They just told me that judging by the damage to the frame it will cost close to 6k to fix.
It is still at the shop but I am going to grab some stuff out of if and take pictures later.
The way I see it, exterior needs a new bumper, hood, driver fender, and driver rim. The metal bumper in the front got pushed back into the radiator, and the driver suspension in the front is @!#$. The car still drives, I backed it up and parked it over by the curb, but it was a damn challenge.

They said it would be over 2k to fix the chassis and suspension. They are a reputable shop but that is bull@!#$. I feel like I'm in a dream right now and I'm looking at my life in 3rd person. I'm 17 and my parents disowned me for the next month and won't help me with anything but signing the paper for whatever I choose to do.

Sorry for the ramble but I need to get some opinions on what to or what you would do if you were in my situation, I've never gone through anything like this before so I havn't a clue where to start.

wait, you hit the tree on purpose? I certainly hope not.

So the insurance co. told you it's totaled....what's the question/problem?

I was told if you are going to hit a tree, hit it dead center, not to a side. I was no way in hell going to avoid the tree all together. I was only going maybe 15-20 mph when I hit the tree. Insurance hasn't gone there yet I'm waiting to hear back from them.

how much will the insurance company give you? i would take anything out of the car that you want, and use the money they give you for another car...probably easier...

Sounds like he had a few choices, but the tree was the less painful way out ATM. It also sounds like the shop declared it totaled.

I would wait for an insurance adjuster to look over the car before writing it off. If its still totaled, then its probably time to move on.

What exactly can I take out of the car. They want to give me like 1500 for it. I could part it out for much more than that. The eco in it is in excellent shape and everything from the firewall back is mint.

Since any decision you make now would be based on total speculation, I would wait for the adjuster to look at it and see what the insurance company tells you. Nothing else is really relevant right now, what the insurance company says is what matters, not your opinion or a shops opinion on how much it will be to fix it. Just hang tight and wait for the insurance to get back with you.

Why did you make another account just to post about totaling your car. Multiple accounts make baby Jesus cry.

Sorry I didn't take more pics. Only had the phone and didn't want to look at it any more.

We ripped the bumper on and the metal bumper is bent into the radiator but everything behind that is fine.
Everything on the driver side got smashed pretty bad though. As you can see the rim is not exactly held on the way it is supposed to be.

Well...I'm a autobody tech....not saying I'm an expert....just saying I deal with this everyday and I don't know where you live, I live in Manitoba and here is how the system work here. When the car comes in, if the damage is over the value of the car, it's a loss, the customer will get a check from the insruance company for the BOOK VALUE of the car, you can then buy the car back, and with as you please, but if you wanna put it back on the road, up here, you have to get a BODY INTERGRITY done and then a SAFETY, then you drive it if it passes. I will also say, just to let you know how a body shop works, we get a guideline of how much every shop can charge for material, labour and parts, a front bumper replacement can run up around $800-$1000 canadian, that includes, part, paint and prep material and labor to remove, prep, paint, and re-install the bumper. Pro body work is NOT cheap and of you try and fix throw the shop you will pay dearly may advice....walk away, trying to part the car is not a bad idea....but where are you gonna keep the car while it's getting stripped and if you wanna sell it as a whole...you might not get much more $$$

If I were to fix the car I'm not worried about the body work or the front of the car.. I'm worried about the front driver axel and all the components. The control arm was pretty well fu*ked and it looked like my chassis took a beating from the curb pretty bad here also.

it doesnt look as bad as I imagined it in my head.. I'd say fix it if possible, even if the insurance company wants to total it. just make sure its repaired correctly..

I had a Corvette Red '96 Cavalier Z24 that got sideswiped across the nose, knocking the whole front end off practically.. I fought tooth and nail to keep the car, but with the miles, the insurance company said no. I was gonna buy it back, but when the insurance company said they were sending a flatbed to the shop to pick up the car, I left work early and grabbed everything I could outta car.. EVERYTHING aftermarket.. then ripped the front bumper off and took the car out to the street and drove the piss out of it til the motor popped from leaking oil

I had a $900 dent from my friends truck on my car.

My quote was about $200 for paint and $700 for labor. I can undertsand why theyd total that.

Wojo shut up. I had the fu*ker off for 3 days to get brackets welded on for fog lights and I end up hitting a cupcake of a tree dead center. What are the odds.
Does it make a difference what the body shop tells the insurance guy. Because the shop I have it as is like the best around, but also a lot more expensive. If I take it and get a cheaper quote will it make a difference to the insurance people.
