Whoops! Popped a tie rod boot
Monday, September 17, 2007 11:52 PM
Got my car home from Kendal Chevy, and I noticed that it makes a metal on metal noise when you are turning! Uh-oh! The passenger tie-rod boot is pooping grease!

I'm gonna go to NAPA and buy the $20 tie rod end. Is this a bad idea to get the $20 one or will the $50 one not be worth the markup? I plan on using a concrete brick and my backyar to do the repair. Can it be done in the back yard on a concrete brick, or will I have too much trouble with the castle nut?

What? People do it all the time, right? I'm sure I'm not the only one that has had to change a tie rod end without the convenience of a lift.

Now for the stupid question:

When removing the ball joint, does it go down or up?

The best help that I can think of, when you replace a tie rod end the tow in alignment must be re-set ....

Please find a shop that can do it all ...

You'll be better off ...

Yeah, don't trust a brick with your life. Get a cheap 20 dollar set of jackstands almost anywhere and use those to hold your car up.

there are just some things that should be left to professionals, or people who know what they are doing and have everything they need to do it. This is one of those things, if you do this wrong your life and the lives of others could be endangered.

Well, I went to Blake Chevrolet, 'cause they can do an alignment. Now the tie rod end is fixed, BUT...

...another steering issue has sprung forth.

When I steer I can hear a creeking much like a gear turning on metal.

It's a choppy regular kind of sound, not the clunk and pop that was happening before.

jack the front end up and check the wheel bearings for copious play

k, but it ONLY happens when turning the steering wheel, whether at a dead stop or going round a corner...
