hey wanted to get some advice or info. my lifter is tickin when the car is first started then it gets quieter after i drive for a little bit. its also kinda loud when my heat is on. my friend has a 03 cavy an his was doin the same thing, then on sat his lifter fell threw the motor an he is gunna have to replace a lot of @!#$. the mechanic said that its gunna b around 2500 or so to fix it. so im wonderin if im gunna have probs with mine next. its like 500 to replace it, im wantin to kno if i could maybe get it adjusted or what. im not to sure on this stuff, so any info would b greatly appreciated!!!
thanks guys
Its not your lifters. Your car needs to have lifters in order for them to fail, which it doesnt. The cams directly control the valves. No lifters, push rods, or rocker arms. So if the mechanic told you your lifters were bad, take it to another shop.

That sounds like it goes away with engine temp. If the sound is coming from the top of the engine, i would suspect the valves to be making that noise. I cant really do much more w/o actually seeing the car.
well in my friends case...what happend with his car? it wouldnt start an when it did he had to keep his foot on the gas the whole time an it sounded like it was gunna blow up. plus it wasnt gettin enuf gas to keep it goin. i thought that it was the fuel pump, but when he took it to get it looked at thats what the guy said.... thank u for ur help...
so what should he b lookin at to b wrong then fixin it wise?
Lack of fuel could be a bad fuel pump or clogged fuel filter. Possibly bad injectors, but im not thinking its that. The easiest way to see if your getting enough fuel is to crank the car when it wont start. If you smell fuel then it isnt an issue and the problem is elsewhere. Also you can check the fuel pump by just turning the key to the run position and you should hear a "wine" come from the rear of the car for a few seconds, thats the fuel pump working.
Also some more specifics on what "fell through" the engine would be helpful. Was it found in the oil pan? Is there a loud banging when the car is running? A compression test would be helpful on both your cars. Any little detail would be helpful.
i just wrote him to get all the specs and told him what all u said.. ill let u kno whenever he writes back here in a min
THANK YOU!
ok got it together now. just talked to him. he said that he took it somewhere else an found out that the first valve fell threw to the piston...somethin like that. so should i b expectin the same prob? thats no good...
Well your friend in going to need a new engine. The valve either broke or the valve spring, retainer, or lock broke.
I would have your car compression tested to see if a valve is bent and not seating properly. Also it wouldnt be a bad idea to remove the cam cover and check valve springs, retainers, and locks. Make sure that none are broken, loose, or missing.
I had a friend that bought a 1st gen turboed eclipse with a knock/tick (i never heard it so im not sure on the exact sound). We pulled the head off it and found a valve sitting on top of the wrist pin. The valve broke due to the previous owners beating it with the turbo maxed out. It broke a valve and they continued to drive it and it eventually smashed a hole through the piston.
