98 fire starting probs.

ok have a 98 sunfire with 2.2 179xxx miles
the car has been having some problems at start. when i turn the key it either 1. wil crank for a split second go dead and then continue to crank until it starts(usually takes a a few secs of cranking) or 2 it just takes several seconds of cranking to start.

so my check engine light came on so i had it scanned at local autozone, came up crank pos. sensor. so after much swearing and bleeding i got it replaced. It worked great and started fine for about hmmm a few hours and now the same problem is back. i never had the code cleared but that shouldnt cause the problem. im thinking im about due for a tune up plugs wires oil change. as im running kinda rough and think its missing at times. also i dont know if this is normal but with the car in park when i can on the gas it wont rev past aprox 4000? im hoping its not a ignition control module or fuel pump issue as both part are like 260-300 buck each. i hope someone can help me because im broke as and dont want to take it in. i can fix whatever is bad but i need to know whats bad first!!! also im thinking i want to run some seafoam through it and read some of the posts on it and am cool with pouring it in the gas and in the oil but not sure where this hose off the booster is??? does it matter if i pour it in there or if i just pour it down the TB?

A good starting point might be to make sure the code does in fact go away after being cleared, and hasn't been joined by any others.

up date so this weekend i put in new plugs, wires, air filter, and did the 1/3 seafoam treatment. the car seems to be getting worse. sunday night it almost didnt start and when id did the theft light was on?? WTF??? it did however go off after the next start. and then last night on the hiway it was like losing power as i was getting on, like power was being cus and it was surging? the last time the car acted all wierd was when my the alt was going out. i havent had it tested yet but i cant assume that a bad alt would cause these probs, but maybe??

The car should rev past 4000 rpm in park or neutral. That is the park\neutral rev limiter.

As for the rest, we need more details. Cant help you without it. Check spark (coils maybe?) and check fuel (clogged fuel filter?) These are just baby steps.

ive checked the batt, alt, fuel pump relay, fuel presure regulator. when it starts it runs great no surges or rough idle. it is still throwing the code for crankshaft position sensor even after i had the code cleared it came back. im starting to think the sensor is my problem and im going to warranty it this week and put another one in but im doubtfull that the problem wont come back.

so my new question is what may be shorting or causing the sensor to keep trowing a code. its very had to see as it is burried on the back of the motor under the manifold.and i would like to check the wiring to see if there is a short???????????????? when it starts fine to cel goes off but when it starts wierd again the cel comes back?????
