Recently bought a 2004 Cavalier. It was well taken care of but there's one problem that I would like to fix. When you are sitting in the drivers seat the steering wheel and steering column are about 1 inch adjusted to far to the right. The plastic dash piece that goes around the steering column has a very wide gap on the left side but no gap on the right side. I have checked with other Cavaliers and the gap is the same on both sides and the steering wheel and column are centered when you sit in the seat. I noticed this before I bought it but figured it could be adjusted. All that needs to be done is for the column itself to be loosened and moved left about an inch and tightened down. I'm just afraid that since it's not centered correctly that something is on a bind. I first thought that maybe this was normal but every Cavalier I have checked proves that mine is out of the proper adjustment. I also checked the seat to see if it was out of adjustment(to far to the left)but it was okay. Any ideas on what I could do to put it back into proper adjustment? Thanks!
Only up and down...you would have to perform serious modifications to adjust it left or right.
Carfax it. Im thinking it was hit and a @!#$ty bodyshop tossed parts at it. I have never heard of a steering column being off like that.
There are two bolts on the top of the steering column (15mm I believe) under the cluster that will release the upper part of the column... then there's two more further back under the bottom of the dash (also 15mm I believe). With those four you should be able to move it side to side... but an inch? I don't think there's that much play in it. Maybe 1/4"...
