fixing a ld9 rob knock

Looking at picking up a sunfire gt that has the ld9 rod knock. Looking for a fast and easy way to fix the problem. Can the oil pan be dropped and the crank and bearings be replaced without removing the engine from the car? Would doin it this way hurt anything else? Anything else that should be replaced while im in there?

It depends on what kind of deal you were getting i guess. But i would yank the motor out to do it since you would have to pull the timing chain. But you will need a new crank which i'm not sure if you could get so you would have to get it turned and balanced. Which ever rod had the spun bearing i would have it checked to see if it stretched it.

Meaning making the hole where the bearing sets bigger, or oval shavped. Then your going to need a pan gasket and timing gasket. Oversized bearings depending on how much they took off the crank. And while you were in there i would changed the timing set and water pump.

But for all that i think i would find a yard motor.

If it was me I would get a motor from a junkyard. You do not know if the crank is good or not until you pull it apart. You might get away with polishing the crank, if so putting in new bearings would be ok. If you are going to fix the problem fix it right, pull it and tear it down have everything checked.
