When should fuel pump be replaced?
Thursday, August 28, 2008 5:29 AM
Hi,

I was at my mechanic for an oil change and I asked him when I should change my fuel filter.
He told me to change it soon as I have 95,000 km and have never changed the fuel filter. He
also said fuel pumps on Cavaliers are known to fail early and it would be a $700-800 job.
At what average age or miles/kilometers does the average fuel pump need replacing?

sorry but lmao at 7-800 dollar job!!!!! I just did one on my friends 03 all by myself took about an hour and a half, in the arizona heat of summer. Part cost 234 at pepboys. and works great. np. it doesnt need replacing unless its dead really, and if you ALWAYS keep the tank above at least a quarter tank, I keep both mine above half at all times to be safe and always haave enough gas to go wherever whenever i want. replace fuel filter every 12,000 miles. fuel pump when it dies! if its fine, then leave it alone. if you cant do it yourself then you must not have two hands, a jack, and eyes that function properly. its really easy, just time consuming.

It's not something I would normally consider "preventative maintenance". If the car runs fine, I'd say skip it. Just a filter, thanks.

For a dealer or shop to do $700-$800 is about normal. The fuel pump assembly is around $300. This si something you do not replace unless it stops working or has a issue. They are known to go bad, but do not always. Keep the fuel filter changed every 20-30k.
