well i got an 04 cav, and today my car was idiling and all the sudden it shut off on its own....i tried to start it but no go. It trys to starts buy dies right away....i dont hear the humming i usually hear when i turn the key on so im pretty sure its the fuel pump. Anyway does the tank need to be droped in order to change it?? any tips or ideas?? i banged the tank while some one was cranking that didnt work.....and lately i have been running the car with little gas so im sure that had something to do with it....any help would be great!
well #1, does it have gas in it?
#2, does it start, run for a second and shut off? If so.....is your theft light on/flashing?
#3, get a fuel pressure reading.
#4, check that you have power AND ground at the fuel pump
Yes, that tank has to be dropped.
running low on gas never hurt me. i always used to run it low and even ran out on quite a few occasions. this has happened when my gauge read 1/4 tank. so if you were low, put gas in it
if it was running and died, it probably isnt theftlock.
if you know the pump isnt turning on....check the power and ground like john said. if that checks out then drop the tank and put a new pump in. its not that hard....pick up a haynes manual
well i havnt checked for pressure, (dont have the gauge ), it has gas in it about 1/8th of a tank...it cranks but doesn't start. Definitely not passlock problem...i was under the car earlier and i wasnt sure which wires to probe with my DMM but i saw two plugs there and im assuming that the one with only 2 wires are the one for the fuel pump ?? anyway im almost 100% its the pump...thanks for the help guys i have never changed a fuel pump before but im pretty good with cars any thing i should look for? thanks again !!

also check the fuel pump relay, make sure its working before you dump $$ on a pump!

Yeah could cost you up to $300 just to do your fuel pump. Sucks when it goes out too, specially if your driving it and happen to roll up into a rednecks yard and he comes out with a shotgun. :S "Good times"
