I am having a problem with my 2003 Cavalier. When trying to start the car tonight, it stalled within a second or two. None of the gauges went through the typical startup sequence. When applying throttle the car would start, instantly rev, then die (tach didn't move at all even after firing). Any ideas what may be causing this?
The car has a remote starter installed, but it's been installed and working fine since the car was new.
Any help would be appreciated.
Any check engine light on? How long has it been since youre plug wires and spark plugs have been changed? Also how long has it been since the fuel filter has been change?

I can't tell if the CEL stays on or not as the car doesn't run long enough for the lights to do their regular cycle when starting. Plugs and fuel filter are original. The car has 80,000 km (50,000 miles).
The car hasn't ever shown signs of running poorly, so I doubt the plugs went bad during the 2 hours it was sitting since last being driven. I think the lack of gauges is a result of whatever isn't working right, but could be wrong. Is there a specific module/sensor that is responsible for the gauges?

Im guessing its the theft bypass for the remote start
Yes remote starter theft bypass could for sure be the problem, If u can find the fuse to disable it see if that corrects anything. If u can get you hands on a ODB II reader that will help you out a bit as well. As Stephen was saying that would be the first to trouble shoot first.

I just posted a thread about this same problem a second ago and then I saw this thread. I am having the same exact problem with my 2000 cavalier z24. I get my car to start about the 30th time. My theft and service light come on when the car finally starts. I don't have a remote start but I think it just may have something to do with the theft system as well. I am going to take out my alarm fuse and see what happens.
I managed to get the car started today. Disconnected the battery for a couple minutes then reconnected. Everything seems fine now. Still curious what may have caused the issue though.
