Simple Starter motor question

About a year ago I had trouble with my starter motor - it was clicking but that was it. I hit it with a hammer a few times and it worked flawlessly for a year. A few weeks ago when I tried to start my car it wouldnt event click. I checked under the hood and the wiring was done really bad (the person who had it before me did some stupid stuff with it. The starter wires were spliced and they were connected together using those little yellow caps you would use on indoor electrical wiring.) Anyways I redid all the wires and it worked flawlessly. I've had no problems for like a month.

I started my car last night drove home parked it. This morning I was about to go to school and the car didnt start. I do hear a click everytime I turn the key...but that is where it ends. I checked my connections and everything is still good. Everything works inside the car (radio, horn, dome light, hazards, wipers etc.) There is power at the starter also.

I'm pretty sure the starter is finished. I tried wacking it with a hammer this morning but it didnt help.

So, where is the best place to get a starter motor considering price etc. And what starter motors would fit on a 1997 2.2L manual Sunfire. Ie. do the starters from the 2.4 L fit? Do the starters from the ecotec fit?

although this sounds more like a problem with the stater solenoid, if you want to replace the whole starter, i would recommend a remanufactured starter.if you're looking for something with a little more grunt, the 98+ 2.2l starters are available with a gear reduction version that fits exactly in place of your old one. a starter is not something you want to get from a junk yard honestly, because you'll most likely get it, have it work for a while, and need to replace it again. at which point, you'll be out another $30, and your time.

Well I'm going to get a yard one while I wait for a new 1. Its my only car - I don't have much of a choice. I figured since the solenoid is screwed up I might as well change the starter while I'm at it.

The gear reduction version - what does it do, whats so special?

How much $ appox would I save if i just wapped out the solenoid instead of the whole starter?

Take your battery in to get checked also. I just spent the better part of 2 days screwing with our outback and it turned out to be battery connections. I know it's not the same car but moral of the story is to check the simple things first. That was not a fun couple of days

Battery is fine - its a new Red Top (about 4 months old).
As mentioned above the wiring was screwed up and I fixed it. I did a great job wiring except one of the connections on the starter came lose.
Unfortunately, I already picked up a starter from a 99 sunfire. Anyone need a starter?

What is this Gear reduction version of the starter ? Is it only for 98 cars and up ?
I have a 95 and my starter clicks in cold weather but starts great in warm weather.
But in warm weather if i have the lights on (headlights and taillights with foot on the brake)
it will click once or twice then start just fine.

It may just be the solenoid I dont know, But if you have more info of this better starter from 98 and up
that would be great.

its really the same starter, just has a gear reduction drive to give it more torque to spin the engine. it also has a smaller motor itself, and is lighter weight. no, its not just for 98+ cars, you can bolt it to any ohv cav and it'll work fine.
