'96 2.4- Rough Idle, bad miss under load

Hi guy's,

I just joined the site to get a little advice. From the searching I've done, this seems to be THE place for J body info.

My wife's '96 Sunfire GT (2.4 Auto) started missing badly at idle and under load out of the blue a few days ago. The plugs are fouled and it's puking black smoke out of the exhaust. Our cousin brought over his Snap On scanner and the codes we got are:

P0300- Random Misfire
P1133- o2 sensor insufficient switching
P0171- Fuel system lean Bank 1
P1171- Fuel system lean during acceleration

The scanner also showed major( multiple) misfires on 1 and 3, and minor misfires on 2 and 4

So far, we replaced the plugs, and grabbed the whole cover assembly from the wreckers (coils, cover, ICM, everything)

I disconnected the battery while switching everything out, and the car ran great for the first 10 min. then went to hell again with the exact same issues.

I'm lost. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Sorry, the second code is P1133- o2 sensor insufficient switching bank 1, sensor 1.

and you didn't replace the @!#$ O2 sensor, why?

everything CLEARLY points to it! hell, even the codes show it!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't it revert to open loop with a bad 02? Granted it would still run rich, but not to the point of fouling plugs, and puking black smoke, along with the horrible misfires.

A new upstream O2 is $50-60.

It's not going to "revert to open loop" if the O2 sensor sucks. It still uses the data coming off the sensor which is providing incorrect information and causing terrible driveability. Seriously, you have two codes DIRECTLY saying your upstream O2 is terrible, and others as a result of that fact...

Go unplug the O2 sensor, see if it runs better (open loop forced).

Or go WOT, open loop occurs then too.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

Quick question: Sensor 1 is the front one, before the cat, correct?

o2 sensor solved the problem! Went to unhook it, and found a hole rotted through the end. Replaced it, and all is well. The old coil assembly had black arcing marks on the plastic, so that was probably part of the problem, so it wasn't money wasted.

Thanks for the help.

lol nice, my O2 sensor looked like it exploded when I replaced mine.. and yep the coil pack housing was a good idea to replace.

Glad you got it solved; sorry for my harshness. I wish my problems caused codes, makes things so much easier to diagnose.
