coolant leaking... what could it be?
Thursday, December 04, 2008 12:20 PM
so ive noticed some orange coolant on the garage floor, seems to be coming from behind the front passenger side wheel... id say 6"-12" towards the engine from the wheel itself....

any ideas what this could be?
Thanks

my guess is that you have a leak somewhere and most likely its an overpressurizing of the coolant overflow. there is a tube that comes out of the back (where the cap is) this is designed to release pressure and also some coolant to keep from blowing more expensive pieces. whenever you drive around for about 30 minutes. stop turn the car off and check the upper radiator hose (next to the battery along the front of the motor- in the 2.2L OHV) squeeze it and if it appears to be "extra firm" SLOWLY loosen the coolant cap until you hear air and gasses escaping. do this for a few seconds then tighten it up and repeat the process until the hose is soft and feels squishy. then drive for 30 minutes back to your house, and repeat. if the hose has not gotten really firm again you just needed to let off some extra pressure, if the hose is firm again or more firm than before. report back here.
sometimes this happens when you are running hot and the steam pressure builds.

you may also want to consider picking up a new coolant cap. they are about 6 bucks and sometimes the gasket inside them can cause them not to hold pressure and leak.
