possibly buying a cavy question....
Saturday, December 20, 2008 11:27 PM
my friend needs a new car, and we are looking at a couple cavys but i have a question...

so one of the cars we are looking at (a 2000, i dont know the engine if there are more then one) says it has a overheating problem. what the usual reasons for this car to over heat?

other than that what are some of the things we should look at/for when looking for a cavy, maybe an older one than 2000 also since we are looking in the $1500 range

thanks guys

check for regular engine maintenance (oil leaks, worn out hoses, radiator, fluids see if there is any leakage, etc.) take a test drive of course see how well it handles. Check for rust spots and of course the best for last check its history you don't want a car thats been in tons of accidents or has had some crazy blow outs or anything. and as for the overheating it can be numerous things: radiator, water pump, can even be the serpetine belt, but im not to sure about the overheating part though. I do know though its happened to me if your water pump is locked up and has a crack in it it can make it over heat. Sorry I cant be that much help.

there are several things that could happen to cause a cavy to over heat the biggest is the water pump, the other is the cooling fan motor seems to go out in most cavies around 110,000 miles or so and cause the car to gain some heat when stopped in traffic for any period of time

i worked on a 99 that had an over heating problem it stemed from all 3 the common things

the water pump went out it didnt pump much coolant, the thermostat was stuck closed and the cooling fan was running all the time

so when it come time to fix it replaced the water pump, thermostat, cooling fan

i think in total it cost my sister $275 to fix (junk yard special on the water pump)

if it is the water pump, i do NOT recommend getting one from the junkyard. (i got a reman from oreilly's for $26). the car likely has the 2200 in it, as most did. if you cont tell for sure what is wrong with it, i wouldnt buy it. that is simply because it could be a $7 thermostat, or a $900 headgasket. maybe have a mechanic take a look first?
