I have a 98 cavalier and have been having problems with my blower fan on my a/c and my radiator fan not working. I narrowed it down to my fuse box and that there is something wrong with my relay or something close to it. I took out my relays and jumped them with wire and now work .

besides the fact that i know i need to find a way to fix this. i bought 2 new relays and still nothing, even switched all of them between the two.
I have 2 question for this. Does anyone have an idea why the relays wouldnt work? MY other question is if im going to blow something if i keep the wires hooked up like that with inline fuses(if its ok any idea of what amperage)?

sorry just looked at some of the bad grammar from the first post . im trying to not drive my car to much, just back and for to work and if my wife has our other car. is my a/c or radiator fan gonna blow with a fused wire jumped between?

try replacing the radiator fan/Blower fan, just a suggestion
as of now im just trying to keep everything temp. fixed to just keep it going until i get income tax. At that time im gonna decide whether or not i wanna buy a new car or just spend the money and repair all the problems with this car.besides these problems i have a ton of problems with my clutch (in another post) and have had to take my car back and forth to the shop every other week since february. thanks for all the ideas already guys

Alright... let me see if i have this right. Your blower motor IN the car is not working AND the cooling fan on the radiator is not working. If you jump the terminals both work correctly but after replacing the relays it did not fix it?
sorry if i wrote it down in a confusing manner, i dont write on forums much. If i have any of the relays, new ones that i just purchased today or the old one, neither of the fans work at all. if i jump the terminals like i showed in these pictures, they work. So from here i know that the fans both work. There has to be something wrong in the terminal im thinking but why all the sudden and at the same time. but in the mean time i need to know if its ok to be driving around with fused wire connected in the terminals until i get the problem fixed.
i bet theres a bad ground somehwere. im going to bet that if you look on one of the bolts on your bellhousing either one of them is loose that holds the ground wire. or the ground wire is coroded. i had the EXACT same problem when i replaced my motor. i simply forgot to hook up the ground. i checked EVERYTHING. and finally i found my mistake. and it fixed everything
Obviously fixing it would be the best choice but as long as its fused it should be fine. I would disconnect it when parking though.
As for the problem itself you know both fans work, when jumping the terminals, which means the fans are working, they get power, they get ground. You tried new relays so thats not the problem.
If your not familiar with relays a short explanation is if you give it power and ground and it will flip a switch inside completing the circuit connecting the other 2 terminals (it jumps the terminals inside the exact same way your doing it with jumper wires. So your either not getting a power signal to the control side of the relays or your not getting a good ground to the control side of the relays. Time to bust out the voltmeter. (Quick tip, if you have A/C turning it on will turn the cooling fan on for when your trying to check for power to the relay) Also if you have a test light, just go down the line and check ALL the fuses takes 30 seconds to check every fuse in the whole fuse box.
i went through today and checked all the fuses with my volt meter and all were getting at least 14.14volts. it seemed like all of the terminals that the jumper is hooked up to was getting 14 volts too. im gonna take back my relays tomorrow and get a haynes book and look over my ground. i was looking over an old post on the12volt.com and this happened to a 96 cavi. but still wanted to make sure. thanks for all the help so far guys
A relay uses a small amount of voltage to control a larger amount of voltage
Check the ground points
Make sure you are using a proper relay with the proper connections
So this morning I got up and went to get a haynes book. I ended up not really needing it. Its cold outside and i didnt feel like finding the ground on the fuse box so i ended up just sticking a wire into terminal that is supposed to be ground and connected it to the body of the car. now it all works. when it warms up outside, Im gonna take the time and connect the ground better.
halk ass fixes work the best pal! i do it all the time. but yea fix it when you can the right way... i get to that then myself haha
