Well folks,
It has been a long while since I have been on JBO. Between work and school I haven't had a whole lot of time to show my cavy love (other than oil changes and car washes that is). And I think she is mad at me!
The car is a 2000 Cavalier, 2.2 LN2,Manual, 105,000mi and it is winter here in CT, and we just had 14+ inches of snow with temps around 20*F. It has been running fine, smooth and nothing strange. Saturday night I was driving home from work and I was going 55mph on the Highway and I suddenly lost response to the gas peddle. That's when I started losing speed, so i pressed in on the clutch to get more travel so I could get over. When I pressed in on the clutch I had stalled, motor dropped to 0rpm dash lit up. Tried to start it and it cranked fine and a little sputter, but no go. I got a tow home (AAA Saved me there), and when there, I turned the key and it started with no problem at all. Just like any other time. I drove around town Sunday, and it ran like a champ as usual. Monday, on my way to work again (highway) going 60mph I stalled again. No warning, just turned off. I waited 10 minutes, cranked it and it started up fine. I got it off the road and got a tow to a garage(Didn't want to stall in rush our traffic!). Any Ideas given the circumstances? I can't get it to stall in town, or in the driveway. Only on the highway, and both times after slowing down to take an off ramp to merge with another highway, then returning to travel speeds. It hasn't chugged, shuddered, or hesitated. It just stalls when on the highway (so far). Any Ideas? The Garage has been busy, and they looked at it on the 24th, but didn't find anything conclusive yet.
My research lead me to:
Crank Position Sensor
Fuel Filter
Fuel Pump
any input?
If it were the fuel pump, it would likely sputter first. Same with fuel filter. I would say this sounds like a crank sensor, as they do not always throw codes when going bad. sometimes the internals come loose, and cause a short circuit, ECM gets no signal from teh sensor, and shuts the car off. I wouldn't jump to conclusion right away, though as it could be a number of things going wrong but this sounds likely. hope it helps
Did I mention I drive a 2000 Lumina now?-----wigm-tuners.org member
I would much rather replace a crank sensor than a fuel pump. I can do the sensor myself, while the fuel pump is a bit out of reach with the weather the way it is, and my main work area being a car port.
This sounds exactly like the problem my car just had tonight.
I was driving high speeds and I felt a awkward jolt and lost power. Engine was still running but no transfer of power to my wheels, I was able to give it gas and rev it. It finally slowed enough and stalled.
Can I get more info on this clutch position sensor? Or other possible problems.
CRANK Position sensor. Your symptoms are not the same as mine. Mine stalls, no response to gas peddle. I also had no awkward jolt. You may have a tranny issue, if you cant transfer power to wheels.
I suggest you check out the EGR. I know that on Chevy trucks rough idle and stalling when slowing down from highway speeds is commonly caused by a sticking EGR valve. They only open at highway speeds and if they don't close when you slow down it will lean out the engine. Pull it, scrape it out with a screwdriver and put on a new gasket.
2.2 97 Cavalier......the "Crapalier"
Im going a constant speed and have been for several minutes before it stalls. No rough Idle.
Took the garage 3 days to get it to stall again.
Fuel Pump.
