Ok first thing you need to do is do a code check on ur obd1 system. It may be setting a code to indicate a bad sensor being ur water temp, tps, map sensor or o2 and the egr valve may be sticking.I would start simple and clean the egr valve it is adjacent to the air cleaner and has either one or two vacumm lines going to it.Just pull it off (two bolts) and clean with brake clean and wire brush or sand paper. It may have a metal pintal that moves up and down inside u can see may sure it moves freely. Now I would not rule out the map sensor that mounts on the firewall near the blower motor with one vac line and a plug in electrical plug.I would not also rule out a sticking tps or faulty tps for high idle and it may not set a code either.I can list a website to show u how to check the tps,map sensor here http://www.wellsMFG.net this will show u how to do this.Check out diagnostics volume 2 if they have not changed it.I could list loads of info but, think it probably ur tps,or map sensor or even the O2 sensor right off.The idle air control may or may not set a code so do the code check to see if it's setting anything in the ecm to start with. Some intermittent problems will not always set a code on 1st gens or any cars even if the car runs bad.I hope this gives u some possibles start with the code check, then egr valve cleaning, and then check the map sensor(highly recommend) with a multimeter) and then the tps with a meter.I could go on forever but this is alot to start.

after checking the TPS and IAC valve, i looked for vacum leaks and cheked the egr, i am left with one thing on my mind - MAP sensor. i will rip it of and test and replace, hopefully this works! this guy wont give up on this car...

Yeah the map sensor as I stated above would make the idle loco.I would recommend replacing those vac lines I did and some are rubber and some are plastic at least on mine they are.The plastic lines can be bought at advance auto or auto zone and I also replaced the boots that some of the vac lines go into and these can be gotten at the same two stores.Good luck.If I think of anything else I will post it.
