weird cavalier problems?
Tuesday, February 10, 2009 2:12 PM
hello, I have a 96 2.2L Cavalier coupe. It stalled on me a couple of times back in Nov. Couple of times as in 3 or 4 times within probaly a month. I then changed the fuel filter and now add lucas oil treatment about once every few months. It hasn't stalled for about 2 months and then it stalled last week twice. I took it to a mechanic and after he drove ithe said it seemed to be fine and it didn't stall on him. It also seems to like buck,/jolt/ like hiccup like 2 times every once and a while when I'm stopped at a stoplight. Plus it seems every once in a while when I accelerate like it almost deccelerates first then accelerates and then does that for like 10 seconds (I don't really know how to describe that it just seems like its trying to go faster but it can't and then deccalerates for a split second then tries to accelerate again) It's hard to decribe it really, but thats what I notice.I know it could use a new drive belt but that shouldn't cause this? Also, I've replaced the spark plugs and fuel filter, regular oil changes, air filter, coolant, trans fluid, anything else to replace??

did you replace the plug wires? I know theyre hard toget to on the back but sometimes if one is shorting out or arcing to the block it will cause something like your problem.. Your heck engine light isnt on?

Problems never occur when you take the car to a mechanic it's weird that way

That's why i work on my own vehicles unless i don't posses the know how then i pay the mechanic a little more to show me what he did and so i can see the actual work he/she does

Good things to have are analog volt/amp/ohm meter and a engine diagonstic code reader (i picked mine up @ wal-mart for like $60 best investment i have ever made)

I have had several issues like this the first was a map sensor (had engine light map sensor code) it would dump fuel, then not squirt enough fuel when accelerating the car would slow down then accelerate just fine..

upon slowing down it would some times kill the engine from lack of fuel

also if i accelerated quickly then let off abruptly it would stall out....

upon getting map issue fixed and another 4 months with out engine light

i had a set of bad coils (caused by the mentioned problem above had engine light multi-cylinder misfire) they were over heating causing a short out in the ignition system there after the coils 2 new coils and i was back up and running

i havent had many other experiences like this

but things that could also cause this
faulty o2 sensor might cause it (you would have engine code)
faulty throttle position sensor

other sensors can also have a factor in to the issue and not emit a check engine light
