so my timing chain snapped awhile back and im just now getting time to work on it. i pulled the cams and all the valves look good from the top but when i turn the crank over there is a slight hisss noise but no resistance of compression. im puling the head now and was woundering what order i should take the bolts out and what the torque specs are when i reinstall. thanks matt

Sounds like you have a bent Valve or damaged valve seat. IF your cams are removed your valves should be closed, when you go to turn the motor over you have no compression. I'm not a junkie with Cavaliers, however when I rebuilt one of the Z24's I noticed there are no tolerances (or room for error) should a timing chain break.

If this is a 2.2 Just get another motor from the scrap yard, they are a dime a dozen. If this is a Z24.... Goodluck. (I bought them all in Thunder Bay, so no use checking Lol)

Sorry I don't have a direct link, The Factory Service manuals Will provide you the torque specs you need for the head bolts.

i pulled the head and i have 6 exhaust valves bent. now i have an excuse to rebuld the motor . sad thing is this car only has 64,000 miles on it and it is babied when driven. i have never seen a sprocket on the crank shatter like this one did.

From previous experience.

DAILY DRIVER = TOSS IN USED MOTOR.

Track Car - Rebuild with aftermarket parts.

Seriously though, If you don't have experience or someone to rebuild the motor for you it's best just to toss in a replacement. You will save time, Money and frustrations.

Average rebuild kit: $500~$700
Machining work: $150+

Running the car for 3,000 km until it seized: Priceless.

It knocked, so i put my foot to the floor and blew the rods right out of #1 and #4.

Used running motor: $500.........................
