Cavalier Z24 No Oil pressure? (4th Engine in Car)

Ok, So now i realize why GM is failing.

Car: 1998 Cavalier Z24 Vin. 2.4L (Engine from a 2002)
Problem: No oil pressure?

Anyways, I started the car and started driving this morning and no oil pressure. (atleast the dummy light says that). So i pull over the car and check the oil, It's full.

I drove the thing home (about 5 minutes away and kept it under 2k rpm). Never heard it knock so I'm hoping i can still salvage this engine as it's only been in the car for about 4 months now. Yes, I've replaced the motor 3 times already and it came with a replaced (blown) motor in it.

Now that i have it home, I unscrewed the oil pressure switch from the right hand side of the head, start the motor and.... No oil.... what so ever.

The last motor's oil pump had seized up and the LH threaded bolt on the Balance shaft gear streched and broke. Causing no oil pressure. I spent about 30 minutes pulling the oil pump assembly out of the car to find it's perfectly fine. Not sure what else would cause NO oil pressure if the pump is fine...

As it sits now, on the street on ramps... I'm considering burning it to the ground as I drive away in my boosted Datsun. Lol.

Any suggestions?

Just tossed the Oil pump assembly back into the car, with fresh oil, and a new filter.

Everything appeared to be OK. Then I started the car and the same thing happened.

Not sure what else to do, or if anybody has had a similar problem?

I'm thinking maybe a spun main/rod/cam bearing would cause Low oil pressure, but not NO oil pressure.

Does anybody has a diagram of what the pressure relief valve should look like on the pump?

maybe you should not blame GM just because you can't seem to find the issue with your car

I know I over reacted and I apologize. This car is a great Daily driver but it's always one problem after another, and every time i go to the parts store the guy behind the desk says something like "This is a common part that goes, the 2.4l is designed poorly.. then goes on to rant about how he sells replacement parts like hot cakes.

However, This problem has been resolved for now. I believe the quick lube that changed my oil put a defective filter in! I'm cutting it open tomorrow to find out how much wear and tear occurred. I went to Canadian Tire and bought a cheap $6 Motomaster filter, spun it and and ta daa! the pressure is back. I simply took the oil pressure sensor out of the head and let some oil fly!... I think this was the most revealing experience of my life!

I didn't suspect it would be the filter because I've been driving on it for about 900 km, and fresh oil.

Now the only problem is, oil starvation. I hope it didn't destroy the bearings and crank journals in the engine.

Anyways, things appear to be fine for now (no awkward noises, temps are still remaining low, and oil dummy light)

Think i should go back to the garage and explain what happened?

absolutely, if it werent for the fact that you actually pay attention to your car, they would have ended up putting an engine in your car, its important that they know they are installing inferior products

91 all white drop top. Need parts!!!

I sure hope so, When i bought that car the engine was blown. So i put in a motor and it lasted about 12,000 kmh and then the oil pump seized and it caused damaged to the crank journals, so i bought another one and put it in, this time it was my fault, i revved the motor to 4,800-5,000k and spun the #1 and #4 rod bearings and i considered that motor garbage. So this is the fourth engine and it started knocking (same symptoms as the previous engine) so i was upset. However, i'm thinking the pressure relief valve stuck open on the pump because the quick lube pumped dirty oil into my car.

So, as you stated half and half is probably right.

1. Original owner said the light came on one day, so they drove it home and parked it. Motor was knocking hard and was full of oil.
2. Oil pump seized, the crankcase was full of oil.
3. My fault, over revved the engine and spun the bearings.
4. No oil pressure, either bad filter quick lube put on, or pressure relief valve was stuck open. (currently still running but i'm not sure how long it's going to last)

The car is in fair shape, so i hope to keep it awhile.

Be ready for more problems with that cheap ass oil filter you just put on your car

They are terrible

Goto the dealer and get a GM filter or find someone that sells Wix

I'd go to the lube place with the defective filter and tell them they owe you a new engine. It might be running fine now but I'll bet you shortened the life dramatically. They will have to claim on the filter manufacturer but they should have insurance for it. Get them to pay for replacing the engine.
