Hey guys, I'm new to this forum but I've read a lot of posts and you guys are really helpful.
I traded my 1990 Geo Metro for this car last summer and it's in pretty awkward condition.
The water pump went out on me a little while I after I bought it, causing me to park it.
I read that the water pump job was very difficult and I've finally saved enough money to get it done by a family friend.
The problems I have with the car are as follows:
ETS Off light always on.
ABS light on, rear tires drag until I get out of first gear the first time I start the car.
Hard shifts. Into drive, into reverse, into any gear.
I wanted to know if anyone has had these problems and what suggestions would be to fix it.
I was thinking about replacing the engine/tranny mounts soon but I'd like to know how difficult of a task that is.
I was also wondering if the ETS being off has anything to do with the hard shifting and general douchebaggery my car likes to perform.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks for your time!
I forgot to mention my Engine light is on with following codes:
P0113- IAT sensor
P0335- Crankshaft Position Sensor Malfunction
ETS light goes on among ather causes when you pull the ebrake one or two points so check that the ebrake lever is completly down, I would also clean battery posts and grounds and check the battery and charging system, when my alternator was faulty I got a bunch of warning lights on the dash. The ABS system needs a good flow of not less than12 volts to work properly. As for the hard shifts if it is an automatic check the transmision fluid level. Replace the sensors indicated by the CEL if their wiring is ok. By the way do this: with engine off, turn the ign. switch to the on position, disconect the negative of the battery, wait 5 minutes then turn ignition switch to off and reatach the negative to the batt. this will reset the computer and erase some warning lights, if they reapear then there is a problem that must be solved.Engine mount is not that hard to replace, tranny a little more because there is few space to work. And last, yes it could all be related...sort of. My 2 cts. good luck.
Both the ETS and ABS lights could also be caused my a bad or dirty wheel speed sensor.
And make sure you have enough tranny fluid in your transmission also. If you get low enough on tranny fluid, the car will shift hard.
As far as the water pump..... its time consuming... you have to take the timing chain cover off, remove the timing chain, and a bunch of other crap on the front (pass side) of the motor to get to it.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'm glad I can actually get help from someone instead of being flamed.
I drropped my Z off at a family friend's house and he's currently replacing water pump/timing chain.
When I get her back I'll definitely check the trans fluid level and try the battery thing.
After that I'll check the wiring for my sensors and see what has to be done from there.
Yep, what was said before. Check the ebrake for the ETS issue. Clean the front 2 wheel ABS sensors with alcohol, as brake dust can build up on them over time. You can see my previous posts for the cost to replace these items if necessary (just went though that nightmare). You also have 2 ABS sensors in the rear hubs of the car. However, you can't remove and replace them (or clean them at all) without replacing the whole rear wheel hub assembly. If that doesn't solve the issue, take it to a real mechanic to get diagnosed.
As far as the gear shift issue, sounds to me like you have an actual physical issue with the tranny itself. Maybe a shift fork is broken, a syncro died, etc. You usually can take it to any tranny shop to get diagnosed for free. Fixing whatever they find, however, is a completely different story....
