i have a 99 2.2 cavalier and the car was overheating.. i took it to a shop and was told thermostat was no good. replaced that and had same problem, was told waterpump had leak through the weep hole.. replaced that.. still overheating was told it was head gasket. finally replaced that and the car was good for maybe 3 weeks... then started overheating yet again, was told to check cap on coolant tank.. replaced that just to make sure it was good.. then was told thermostat went bad so replaced that again. and was also told to check fan relay. replaced that relay, and also checked to make sure that fan was kicking on which it was ... it would come on as soon as the temp gauge went more then half way.. now the car is shooting coolant out of the overflow hose so i was told it was because of a clog in the radiator.. i spent the money and had that replaced.. and im still having the same problem with coolant coming from overflow hose... i also tried to bleed the system thinking its air but when i open bleeder screw a tiny bit of coolant will come out.. then nothing at all for minutes at a time.. then if i rev up the engine ill get a little more coolant out.. but never a steady stream like i thought it was supposed to be..... im running out of money and ideas any help would be great... thanks for anyones time in advance..
the car is still overheating? coolant coming out the overflow is normal if the car is overheating. Do you know if the head gasket was actually bad? Sounds like there could be a restriction somewhere.
Although if the temp got upto 250F(120C) it is possible that the head is either cracked or warp, the shop that replaced the gasket should have checked for this tho. A crack at an exhaust valve can cause problems like that but you should also see coolant in the oil or coming out the exhaust pipe.
