Car cuts out
Saturday, May 30, 2009 4:28 PM
Whenever I've driven my car for an extended continuous amount of time(over thirty minutes at least), it'll quit, as in it sputters for a split second then dies. It'll crank right back up and keep going but it'll continually do it until I let it sit for a while. I have no problems with my regular commute which is barely twenty minutes or so. I've replaced the fuel filter and plan to drop the gas tank in the next few days to take a look but I was hoping someone could suggest something other than the fuel pump starting to go bad lol.

We have good ignition coils on our Cavaliers, but as they get older they can start having 'heat shorts'.

(Insulation on the windings break and cause shorts when the coils get hot)

I don't know any way to test for this being your problem, but consider coil replacement.

Hi,

Classic fuel pump symptoms, most often worse in hot weather.
As mentioned electrical control components can also cause random misfire, coil, plugs, wires, etc.
