The check engine light is on in my 2004 Pontiac Sunfire, 2.2 ecotec 5 speed, and was told that the purge solenoid or purge valve, needs to be replaced, where would these be located. Also would this effect fuel economy. any help would be great.
On earlier models getting a CEL for purge valve could mean a leak of air in the evaporitive emmisions system including that valve. Loose gas cap was often the cause. I actually replaced my valve and it didnt do anything. Maybe try tightening the cap and clearing the code and see if it comes back?
I bought a new gas cap because the old one seemed really loose, I then cleared the code, which was P0455, and then today it came back on, where are the evap canister, purge solenoid or purge valve located at and how can I tell if any of them are leaking or shot any help would be great.
Every other day this same topic comes up, search.

And yet still no answer. Great help.
In doing the almighty Search ......this was prolly the most relevant....and sadly ironic post I could find...lol
the p0455 is for a evap large leak.
You can't test the system without a evap smoke tester and bi-directional scan tool. The most common leak points for this code are a non-functional vent valve or leaking filler neck.
The evap canister, vent valve are located behind the fuel tank. The purge solenoid valve is located near the power steering pump.
Thanks prime my code wasnt the p0455 it was a p0440 but this was the only thing close that search brought up, my vent valve by the charcoal canister was wire tied to the gas tank strap and the two wires were torn out of the plugin, my *Runs better with CEL on* and *Anyone with a lift and a good camera* posts in this section explain better...but after going and having my code rechecked it appears theres a new one...unfortunately the person at Advance was only mildly helpful and im not positive if it was a p1142 or p0142 but was O2 sensor related so now im gonna spend the weekend tracking that one down
