I hope you guys can perhaps shed some light for me.
the knock started suddenly.
the knock starts up more so when you are driving it(engine speed dependent not vehicle speed)
however you can hear it very faintly when you are parked in neutral.
happens when it is cold and hot with it being slightly louder when it is hot.
will be most noticable when you are accelerating with the rpm above 2000 rpm
however it will be their with you foot just on the gas cruising around 2000 and above rpm(just keeping a constant speed).
will be louder when you are trying to accelerate quickly(under more of a load)
i can't hear it at idle or slowing down, but it could just be quieter and drowned out by other noises.
oil is full, changed not too long ago.
does not really sound like the valves.
I had it at a shop and they couldn't find anything wrong.
they said that it sounded like it could be piston slap.
I don't really think it is as it does not happen as loud when it is started and the engine is cold.
I don't really want to be driving it around and causing any damage, but it is not affecting performance at all, or does not feel like it.
any ideas would be good,
thanks
Sounds like a bearing to me. Probably #3 since you've got a 2.4L. Drain the oil and see if there's any metal in it.
well, I drained the oil and there was nothing strange.
no metal in the oil at all(I filtered it)
driving a little yesterday, I did notice that it would only make the niose with the gas pressed, even very slightly.
it sounded like it went away all together when I took my foot off the gas.
Hard to diagnose a car via a keyboard, especially noises.
A rod knock is most often a light rattling sound most prevalent when your foot is removed from the gas after a hard acceleration.
A Main knock is most often heard under a load and is a deep dull thud rather than a knocking sound.
I assume it happens in all gears at certain RPMs.
Can you make it do it standing still in park or neutral?
IF you have an automatic I'd check out the flex plate, they can crack and make strange noises and can be a devil to isolate it's source.
You also could have motor mount issues, under a certain torque / RPM the engine shifts ever so slightly and a portion of it touches the body somewhere.
Check your exhaust hangers and heat shields, they are famous for RPM related noises.
Silly, but make sure all of your lug nuts are tight and it isn't a loose wheel knock.
CV joints tight and have good boots with no play?
Does it make a difference if you are turning left or right when it happens? Can you make it better or worse by maintaining speed and turning the wheel? That would indicate a wheel bearing.
Put an oil pressure gauge on to make sure you've got oil pressure. Short of pulling the pan and dropping bearing caps it is hard to tell exactly what is wrong and if it is a bearing.
Good luck
Dave
how many kms or miles on youre motor?.H the timing chain & tension been changed?. That could be playing a role as well,
Good Luck.
i have an Eco... and was told early year ecos had a problem with a "knock" that turned out to be just a bad tensioner, rail and chain. a shop told me is was a knock 100% but wasnt.
so look into it i guess.
