Best suggestion is get a digtal reader, To see what kind of volts you are running at. Could have a cooked battery cell, And an alternator thats failed.

check engine light is on. when I tried to turn it over, all i heard was a kak, kak, kak, kak sound.

so I replaced the battery and it started up with no problems. after i started it 3 times, I tried to pull it in the garage, but before i put it in gear (auto), the car started to sputter and then died.

After it sputtered and died, what happened when you attempted to start it?

It sounds to me like a charging issue, if a brand-new battery solved it temporarily..?

Best bet is to follow Rich's advice and get a voltmeter. Measure your voltages before you start it & after.. According to the various web-pages I've read recently (fighting an electrical issue myself) Your battery should be around 12.7 volts with engine off, and upwards of 14 or so when the alternator is successfully charging it.

If it turns out to not be charging, check your ground-points, make sure it's got a good connection, especially where that large-negative battery cable goes.
