NEED HELP...2.4tc...
Monday, August 24, 2009 5:31 PM
Hi guys. Ive got a bit of a problem my gfs car has a 2.4tc (1999 Malibu), and it has a massive oil leak. Its pouring out a little over a quart of oil every 5 miles. Ive found the location of the leak, but I dont know what the part is...heres a description, help me if you can...

its a white sensor (has a wire going into the end of it) with a black retainer, seems to be at the end of a short black tube, located at the back of the head in between the cam housings, just above the black plastic coolant neck...

WTF is it and how do I remove and replace it?

Thanks for any help folks.

Sounds like the oil pressure switch, but without a picture cant be for sure. You will need a socket typically 1 1/16 to replace it

does it go into the back side of the cam tower or is it lower?

Its pretty much in between the cam towers, but looks like it may actually screw into the intake cam tower. As far as posting a pic, no go on that, no batteries for the digital cam, no way tp upload from phone. If either of you have a 2.4tc its easy to find...just look at the back of the head (tranny side), between the cams, right above the coolant neck.

Funny part is, about 6 months ago I had to replace the coolant neck, it had degraded and cracked causing a huge coolant leak. Im betting this thing has been dripping oil on the neck for years, degrading the plastic. About 2 months ago I switched the car to synthetic. I forgot that synthetic makes oil leaks worse, and it sure seems to have this time.

We are gonna keep adding oil a couple times a day, along with minimizing driving it, for the time being. If I cant figure out what it is before the weekend Ill take it to Discount or Autozone and say "give me one of those". Its in a tight spot, so sure to be a knuckle buster, but Im pretty sure I can replace it myself, just need to know what it is.

Yes, that is it, and John is right its the oil pressure sending unit. Was pouring oil from the area that the wiring harness plugs in to. Was pretty easy to get to after removing the coil assembly. Actually it was more work getting the coil unit to line up on the plugs than to replace the sender. For once it was the $10 part.

Thanks for all the help guys.
