rad fan problems

My radiator fan will not turn on on its own and my car overheats. If I turn on my ac or defrosters it kicks the fan on so it isnt the relay but it just wont turn on normally. My temp guage also works fine so it isnt the sensor nor reading correctly. Any ideas?

you ac and defroster aren't supposed to turn the fan on....im pretty sure.

whats up with everyones cooling fans lately, mine NEVER turns on in my car, and my car NEVER over heats. And ive got a built motor, how is everyone over heated all of a sudden?

The a/c and defroster are supposed to turn it on because they need more air flow through the ac condenser. Another few pieces of info: I had major rust in my cooling system so i did a flush on the system multiple times. When there was only water and flush fluid in the system the fan would cycle perfectly, the car would warm up, thermostat would open, once the temp gauge got to about the mid point the cooling fan would come on and the car could run for hours at an idle without overheating. After flushing it a few times and getting all the rust out i put coolant in the car and let it run, the temp gauge kept rising until coolant came out of the cap. I know that my cap doesnt seal and am picking one up today but it cycled fine with only water in the system so what could be causing this problem?

Ok it is fixed but the fan kicks on very late. With the new cap that holds pressure the system will hold until the fan kicks on. I think that the temp sensor for the gauge and the temp sensor for the fan are in two different places so at idle with the water circulating very slowly and no air going past the rad the gauge says teh temp is very high but the fan sensor thinks it is normal. The car no longer overflows out of the cap and i think that when it is moving the fan will kick on at the right temperature. Thanks alot guys.
