Loud knock

My boy has a loud knock coming from his 2.4 It does not sound like it is coming from the bottom end. My guess is bent push rod or messed up lifter. I started to pull the exhaust cam side off and realized I cant locate my manual. Do I need to remove the timing chain cover to get the cam cover off? That doesn't look like very much fun. Presuming it is a rod or a lifter can I just swap the out?

theres no push rods or lifters in a 2.4

yes the timing chain cover has to come off, the time chain must be removed and the cam gears. not an easy job.

to do that, you must first place a jack under the engine so it wont fall down, remove the upper engine mount and bracket, move coolant reservoir out of your way, and be prepared to pull the motor. I bet you 20 bucks its a rod knocking. it IS a 2.4

the last rod bearing i spun seriously sounded like the head was knocking, pulled the head apart...nothing, put head back on, only to find out that it still knocked, so i ended up figuring out down the road that the #3 rod bearing got starved for oil. Common issue on the 2.4
