I have 97 sunfire with the 2.2 and the car overheats and only blows cold air, also the engines stumbles and stalls and the fan doesnt ever come on and the car is running lean.

could be water pump, clogged radiator, collapsed hoses, bad thermostat, bad radiator fan, fan relay/fuse, clogged heater core, or any combination thereof.

So far i bypassed the heatercore, and when i unplug the temp sensor the fan turns on. Does the fan run off the temp sesnor or does it have its own sensor?

It is your raditor and electrical fan the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago and I replaced my cooling fan and radiator since then I haven't had any problems.
