What is the purpose for this?

I installed the 086 head so I would like to remove the twin cam fuel line going to the fuel rail. But what is this.....do I need it?

GMR has got nothing on this

No you do not need it. The part is called a accumulator.

Color me old and traditional but.........

The part has correctly been identified for you and others as a fuel damper or fuel accumulator.

Do you NEED it?? well, no, the car will run without it but here's the rub.

The electric fuel pump is always providing fuel to the fuel rail and thus the injectors. It is important that the injectors always have X pounds of fuel pressure to properly atomize the fuel, by that, you always want the same amount and the same spray pattern. You don't want some big fans of fuel and some smaller shots. So you now know that the relationship between fuel flow and fuel pressure, are constantly changing with the opening an closing of the injectors and the varying frequency that this happens. You need a LOT more fuel at 70 MPH than you do at idle. The fuel accumulators assists the system by keeping the pressure and flow the same.

Think of it as a fuel shock absorber.

Now, taking it off.
These cars are an entry level LOW COST unit. They did NOT add anything on them that wasn't needed to make it operate smoothly and properly. IF the manufacturer could have saved $10 per unit by leaving this part off and still have a proper running car do you think they would have?? (the proper answer here is yes)

IF you take it off. You may have some running issues at higher fuel demands, you will most likely have hard start issues, particularly on hot days and after long periods of parking.

Yes, you can take it off but why? People making a LOT more money than you or I and that are a LOT smarter and more educated than I for sure, and I'm guessing you also, designed and put this on the car for a good reason. I'll choose to leave mine on.

A 2.4 in a Jbody never had this. It did in the grandam's and Alero's. So I do not think there will be any issues. More so if you are running a ECU from a car that did not have this it will not be a issue.

mph? don't you mean rpm? fuel demand at 70mph with low throttle input in 5th gear will be a lot less than fuel demand at 70mph in 2nd gear at wide open, don't you agree?

you don't need the pulsation damper. you won't notice its missing either.. ditch it.
