Motor Tear down.... im stuck! HELP
Monday, October 05, 2009 7:20 PM
I had something let go in the top end and I am in the middle of tearing down the car to the head to see what is wrong. Im stuck though. I got the outer chain cover, chain cam gears, etc off but am stuck trying to remove the timing cover where it bolts to the motor. I got out what seems to be every bolt holding it it. Im going step by step according to the Haynes. It seems to be stuck on the motor around where the press in gear is near where the tensioner was. I can not see any more bolts holding it it on the car. Any ideas? I had enough room to get the intake cam tower off, but not the exhaust, and I think thats where my problem is, bent valve maybe?
Thanks

Is this an LD9? Sounds like it.

If it is, you have to remove the cam gears, there are bolts behind them holding the cam tower covers on laterally.

Once you have those out, everything is cake...

call me crazy but I do not see the water pump at all... I looked at the pics on a online motor tear down that was a posted pdf I found on here as well as my haynes and I can not seem to find it???? I got the four pan to housing bolts, housing to AC compressor bracket bolt, cam gear bolts as well as a few housing to block bolts and the tentionser bolts but I see nothing else. Could an old house to block gaskets be on there tight enough that I need to take a dead blow soft hammer to it? Car does have 190k and everything seems original to me

if you have the timing cover off, the water pump gear is above the left hand side of the chain tensioner. look on the back side of the housing in that spot, under the exhaust manifold and theres your water pump. gotta remove that, as it bolts to the timing cover AND the block. if you dont have the exhaust manifold off, you're probably gonna want to take it off to get the pump out.
