front end noise
Friday, October 09, 2009 1:42 PM
For a long time now my car has made a grinding noise up front.
Its much louder when turning slight right.

II RC, I replaced the wheel bearing a while back and it never went away so I just left it be.
That does not mean it's not a wheel bearing, but I figured it would have solved it.

After seeing the condition of my GC's I figured I should finally try and figure out whats making the racket.

The also noise does not appear to be effected by braking.

Any thoughts?

The noise is clearly from the passenger front.

Wheel bearing is usually a moaning or humming sound... say the driver's side bearing is shot... it will 'groan' over a certain speed... say 30 mph... then get worse if you turn the steering wheel and put more weight on that side, so the driver's side would get louder if you were turning to the right (weight shifts to the driver's side of the car). The noise would be less or go away entirely if you were turning left, as the weight shifts away from the driver's side wheel onto the passenger side.

So.. if the wheel bearing you replaced was the passenger side... and it's making noise when you turn right... I'd say the problem is in fact with the driver's side wheel bearing.

I would jack the front wheels up off the ground... then grab the top and bottom of each wheel, and try and move the wheel in and out... if it moves, you've got play in the wheel bearing and it's bad.

If not... something else. Start checking CV boots for tears and leaking grease, bad CV's, etc..

It's not a solid noise. It fluctuates as if I have a "warped" rotor and no brake pad material.

Its always there and gets much more annoying when I turn. Based on hearing and feel, it should be the passenger side.
I just replaced the ball joint and that seems to have agrivated it a little too.

The CV boots are intact and clean.

So, pulling the rim/tire in/out would point to the bearing too then?
