What oil do you run?

1997 Cavalier 2.2, 129k miles. Was stealership- fed Castrol GTX 5W-30 and 10W-40 dino oil for the first 125k miles. I did a 3k run Valvoline Maxlife semi-syn 10W-40, and now I have Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 Full synthetic in it. Going to be doing 5-6k OCIs with this oil. Also, now using NAPA gold and Purolator PureOne filters.

older engines like that thicker weight should be used unless you've done new internals

my cavalier i used a 5w-30 royal purple full synthetic

before that 10w-30 pennzoil platinum

First thing, I'd advise against doing oil changes at 5000 to 6000. It would be better on the motor doing them regularly at 3k plus or minus a couple hundred mines even if the manufacture states it can go that far. I'm not trying to be rude, but see it from experience.

Now for me, I normally use most any name brand 5W-30, but have done at least one change with my '03 with Royal Purple Full Synthetic and plan to do another. I use either Fram or Purolator filters in my Eco.

I've got maxlife in all of my vehicles right now. 2 Sunfire's, the Trans Am and the Outback. GM cars get an AC-Delco filter and the Subaru get's a Purolator Pure One. I stay away from fram but IMHO I think the K&N and mobil1 filters are bit overkill. I'm not saying they don't work well, but I personally can't justify the cost.

5-6k on even a good dino oil would be just fine for most cars. I had a used oil analysis done after the first change with maxlife on the Subaru after 5K and wear metals were well within limits and the oil still had plenty of addtive left. Nick you will be just fine running Platinum and doing oil changes at those intervals. Platinum is a great oil and will serve you well.

So from what I've seen, Royal Purple isn't a bad oil, but it's WAAYYYYY overpriced for what you get. OCI at 3k is just wasting oil. Most oil, even dino can be safely run to at least 5k miles. Many with Mobil 1 EP or Amsoil SSO run to over 10k miles. To the guy with the fram filter, this is why most everyone car-savvy refuses to use them.

Cardboard endcaps FTL. Why would you ever use fram, when you can get a Purolator PureOne, a QUALITY filter, for the same price or less?

RP offers simialar specs to PP, with a little more moly. As you can see, RP uses magnesium as a major replacement for Calcium as an anti-foaming/detergent add. However, RP is at least twice as expensive as PP is. Not worth the money. Both are group III base oils.

Quaker State 5w30 and while some people might not like fram much, i've used fram for quite awhile now and haven't had any problem at all. As for the person who mentioned something to the effect of changing oil at 3,000 miles is a waste of oil and you can go at least 5,000 or more, maybe i'm just extremely old school but i change mine at 3,000 always have. I know of people that have gone 5,000 miles plus and by the time they change it the oil is dirtier and in some cases maybe even sludge, personally i don't want to gamble with my engine like that.
Re: What oil do you run?
Sunday, November 15, 2009 5:26 PM
That really isn't a problem today unless you have a known sludge engine. (Like the pre-04 Chrysler 2.7L, and a few toyota engines). I just changed the oil in my cav (PP 5W-30), my moms 4.0 Mustang (Valvoline Maxlife 5W-30) and my dad's 4.6L Expedition. All will be going on 6k Mile OCIs with no trouble. Bill, I recommend you check out BITOG and do some snooping around. Pleny of people running 8k on dino oil, with absolutely no trouble, and up to 15k or more on Synthetic. Engines, and Motor oils, are much, much better than they used to be when the 3,000 mile rule was put in place. Base stocks are infinitely better, especially with the advent of hydro-cracking (producing Group III 'synthetics') and then you have Group II conventional. The sludge your thinking of mostly took place in older Group I oils, which had a full 12" candle worth of paraffin wax per quart.

This thread should interest you. The first ones are mine. My grandfather always did 5k OCIs with Bulk Dino oil from the dealership or jiffy lube. Look at the rest, especially the 2nd page, with the high OCIs.

Also look at some of these High Mileage UOAs.

This one. 18,000 miles on one oil change. Perfect wear numbers.

I run Mobil 1 synthetic in everything after breakin milage. Do your research. Dont use what dear old Dad uses. Mobil 1 is twice as expensive but the properties are well worth the cost.

I am a professional Mechanic. And Mobil 1 is the only oil I reccomend.

Re: What oil do you run?
Wednesday, November 18, 2009 4:30 PM
Roadking I didn't say Mobil 1 was bad oil. I said there are oils just as good or less (Pennzoil Platinum) and better oils for more (Amsoil or Redline)

I was a manager for 3 pennzoil locations at my previous job.

IMO pennzoil full synthetic is no where near Mobil1.

I only run Mobil1, and a select few other oils.

A few years back, back when i had a really sweet paying Job and could afford that kind of work i took my car to the stealership and i remember my service guy telling me that Mobil one was all they ever used. In fact he used to put it in mine when they changed the oil, whether or not it was the synthetic stuff i don't know but i'm willing to bet it probably was. Either way i never had any problems with it, now i do remember when i worked for chrysler as a parts runner for them i used to pick up royal purple by the cases for the people out in the shop. From what i read from some people on here, am sure glad i never put that stuff in my car.

Look at the chart. When it comes to the add pack, Pennzoil Platinum Demolishes Mobil 1 EP, which is significantly better than regular mobil 1. If the dealer changed it,it was probably Mobil Clean, which is the conventional version.
