I am having a problem where my transmission it red lines at 40mph until i manually shift it into second gear.

Sounds to me youre transmission is almost done, New tranny.

Depending on which transmission you have, you might have a problem somewhere in the shift solenoid circuit. It almost sounds like when the shifter is in drive, the 1-2 solenoid isn't releasing when it should. the fact that you can manually shift it to second gear tells me that the clutches and bands are still functioning properly. If you DTC light is on, then you might want to have the codes checked to see if you have a transmission related code. Also, is the fluid black or does it smell burnt? That is usually a pretty good indicator of major internal problems.

I also agree that it sounds like a shift solenoid, or a shift circuit.

Thanks guys, I'm going to have a mechanic take a look, whenever I get a free day.
Occasionally I do smell something is burning, It is pretty noticeable too.

Oh yeah, no check engine lights come on. Hopefully I am in the clear from a full tranny replacement.
