96' cavalier 2.2 overheating
Sunday, January 17, 2010 7:34 AM
I am working on my girlfriend's car. She told me it started overheating on the way to work.
I brought it into our garage and changed out the basics first. I put new 50/50 antifreeze as well as a new thermostat.
That did not work, so just to be certain that I didnt get a bad thermostat I bought another, but it was not the problem for sure,
after changing out another new one. The first thing I noticed was the fan wasnt coming on. So I went to the junk yard and bought the
temperature coolant sensor, changed it out and the fan started working again. Problem solved? No, not quite still overheating.
I listened to the motor and shined the light around the engine bay. There was no fluids that leaked under the car. There was a few
tiny little bubbles that appeared to be coolant coming from the head gasket on the 4th piston. So, just to be sure I went and bought a
new headgasket, water pump and belt. Put it all back together last night. Car wasnt very smooth running, very faint missing. I think that
it might be a intake or exhaust leak, possible just need to put the new sparkplugs in, because the spark plug at the 4th piston looks bad.
Well, I will try and take care of that problem, however, what I am asking today is more to do with the overheating. After everything I mentioned
above that I changed out, the car is still overheating, with no known leaks? So, being I have never worked on the 2.2 except for this very first time
I know someone out there has some ideas they can shoot my way. I believe I have gotten the hard things out of the way. Maybe just a radiator, but
I would like some knowledge from your experiences and diagnostics. For instance, if the radiator is blocked up, are there any diagnostics
i can do in my garage to see that before i remove it? Well, any information would be appreciated. In the meantime, i need to go pick-up a new o-ring
for the fuel line that connects into the top of the fuel rail, because ever since I disconnected that it has been squirting fuel out, not such a good thing!!

take a pic of the temp gauge where it's "overheating". in normal operation, the needle goes pretty much to almost kissing the red bit before the fan comes on.
