Fuel Problem??? Need help!!
Tuesday, January 26, 2010 7:46 AM
I have searched around and just haven't found quite the answer to my problem. Working on a 97 Cavalier with the 2200 in it. She was driving it and all of a sudden it would just start slowing down and die. She would wait and it would start back up and go again. Well recently it did this and just quit running period. Fuel pump wasn't working. Checked all the fuses and they were fine. Pulled the tank, and the pump would work but not that great. So we have a different fuel pump that works just fine. Plug it into this car and it doesn't work. Can't find any wire breaks at all from the fuse back to the pump. Have changed the whole coil and still not working. Can anyone give me a idea of what this could be? We have changed the computer too. Wondering if we should change the whole engine wiring harness too. Thanks for any help.

did you happen to change the fuel filter when you changed the fuel pump?

isnt there a relay there somewhere?

but above suggestion is a good one... clogged filter is the main cause of pump failure in my experience..

We will change the filter too. But just plugging the good pump in, we cannot get it to run in this car. I can take it back to the other car and it will kick in right away.

yeah... i'd check the fuel pump relay... if it goes bad, your pump will not come on... sounds like a strong possibility since it works fine in another car

I believe its in the fuse block in the engine compartment...

Now we have checked almost everything. No fire to the injectors or the fuel pump either one.

Ok, it seems really weird. The theft system light stays on. Doesn't flash. Can't get the check engine light to come on. No fire to the injectors, spark plugs, fuel pump. Have changed the coil, computer, fuel pump, ignition. Does anyone have any ideas what so ever????

I'de check all the fuses that require ignition. How are the sparkplugs? ..and wires? Hows the batterys condition?

After that, I have no clue.

Did you get the fuel pump to work? When you turn the key to run(not all the way to start), can you hear the pump run for about 3 seconds and shut off? My injected 94 sunbird 2.0 has to see the initial pressure of 47-45 psi to start, then its regulated to 7-5 psi. Otherwise the ignition and injectors wont operate because the array of sensors aren't getting thier respective signals.

Did you do the relearn procedure for the passlock system? You changed the PCM, so I think you need to do this in order for the fuel pump to run. Basically just turn the key to the run position and leave it there for 10 minutes or so and it should learn the new code. That would explain why you have no power to the coils or fuel pump.

We have done the relearn procedure quite a few times. Still nothing. Ready to junk the thing..lol Is there any sensors anywhere that could be causing this??

This sounds simple but try getting a new key cut. Another member suggested this for someone else and it worked.

^^^^ I have heard of that as well... Tho i think i remember hearing it on a newer car... I dont recall the exact issue...

But yeah.. worth a try i guess... also remember that doesnt mean making a copy of your worn key.. it means going to the dealer and getting a new key cut by your VIN.... lol... figured i'd toss that out there just in case..
