What type of oil and what weight??
I use mobile 1 fully synthetic 10w30 on my 2001 cav with the 2.4 and with 138000.
You may get a lot of answers to this. Its all really a moot point in a stock or near stock car. Regular oil n filter changes are the most important part, and use a decent filter.
I use purolater filters.
In my 2004 Cav I use Shell Rotella synthetic 5w40. I went with the heavier grade because of the heat here in FL.
In my gfs 1999 malibu 2.4 I use synthetic as well but heavier grades like 20w50, mostly because it has pretty high miles and they werent the kindest before we got it.

And it killed your car... How?
In answer to the question, there is no "best oil" . In reality, any oil will do the job just fine. Personally though, my 97 2.2L with 135k runs best on Castrol Edge 5W-20. But unless you are willing to run it for 7,500 miles or more, stick with either
Pennzoil Yellow bottle 5W-30, or Havoline DS 5W-30
What do you think about using zmax with Mobil 1 10w30?
There is a an indepth analysis of a bunch of different oils on a forum somewhere but I don't know the link. I'll try and get a hold of my buddy to see if he can send it to me. But I'm pretty sure ams oil came out on top. The study was pretty throrough and they actually took motor parts and compared the wear to see which oil had better protection. I'll try and find out the link and add it.
Mobil 1 Eco's do very well with it. My old 2.2 and 2.4Z both had conventional oil in them before me and you could tell with the valve covers off. my redline. 94,000+ miles mobil one the engine is clean valve cover off looks brand new in their.

Does it do more bad then good for the engine?

Stay away from oil additives. Especially these "miracle performance improvers" and "engine rebuilt in a can" stuff. They do more harm than good. The only additive I would ever put in my engine is Marvel Mystery Oil, and only in a maintenance dose.
By the way, why do so many of you think you need to run 10W-30? Seriously no need to go thicker, use what is recommended. In some cases, thinner is better, as my 2.2L hates thick oil, and loves the thin stuff (hency why I have 5W-20 in it now. 800 miles on the change and no, my engine hasn't asploded yet)

how much is a maintenance dose? and where can i find some at?
Nick wrote:The only additive I would ever put in my engine is Marvel Mystery Oil, .
I use Marvel in both the oil and gas. I put about 8-10 ounces in the oil at each change. The recommended dose for gas is 4 ounces per 10 gallons, or about 4 1/2 to 5 ounces in a typical J tank.
Why do I use it? I had it recommended to me by 2 aviation mechanics and a marine diesel mechanic. The marine mechanic was a pretty smart guy...when I met him he was an ER surgeon, specializing in brain surgery. He decided he didnt like mechanic work and put himself through medical school.

GM recommends 5w30 for our cars and i figure they designed the engines so they would probably know what is the best oil to use.
I used 5w30 for a bit but then i started getting lower oil pressure(like around 8-10psi at idle)
So, i started using mobile 1 10w30 and now I'm getting around 15-18psi at idle

That's just a band aid, not a fix.
I run castrol gtx 5w30 but I may change to synthetic this summer, haven't decided yet though.
ok lemme give it to you stright no preferences no bias just facts, synthetic is better no matter how you look at it and they all are basically the same thing, same principle and concept they just add more @!#$ to it for seals and cleaning stuff like that, look in your owners manual there will be a picture showing the different motor weights and how you can select the best(temperatures really of the ouside not the motor temps) generally colder you use thinner and hotter you use thicker, I have only had one bad oil experience it was with valvoline high milage synthetic, the oil broke down at like 1200 miles in my 95 z24 with a 2.3, mobile one was always good for me in my 95 talon even for like 5000 miles and was not super black yet, royal purple has served the mustang very very well, quaker Qtorque and casrol supersyn 5w-30 ran in my s-10 tilll i sold it it had 240,000 on a v6, my new cavi and my tsi talon are going to get 5w-30 synthetic from castrol or valvoline(silver supersyn), but the overall best oil is going to be the nippon 0w-50 oil or castrol edge makes a 0w-50 as well, i'm swapping it in as soon as i break the motor in on the talon, adn in the cavi GTZ as soon as I get the trans issuse fixed, the HUGE viscosity gap allows for the coldest/hottest, daily driving or performance racing-importtuner.com has a power pages article on the 0w-50 oil and you save gas, get more power, and it runs very clean as it limits friction so it lessens the shavings and gunk that the oil filter catches ultimately making oil changes farther apart, though i'm a firm believer on the 2700to3300 mile change myself,
