when i got to work this morning i pulled into my spot and went to shift the car into park, the shifter slid much easier than normal... felt like it wasnt pulling the cable - and apparently it wasnt.. no matter where i put the shifter it was still in drive and i couldnt get it to go in any other gear (not even neutral) it just wouldnt change... i dont have a tool box at work so i didnt take off the interior shroud to look and see what actually happened but i really dont want to call a tow truck.. has anyone ever heard of this happening? what the hell am i supposed to do?
thanks...
also, the car was registering that the shifter moved... i wasnt able to remove the key from the ignition until i moved teh shifter into the park position.. only then was i able to turn the car off...
Im not at all familiar with automatics..
When you got into your car this morning, and actually put it in drive, did it do anything out of the norm?
everything was normal till this happened. it started up fine, shifted into reverse, then drive, drove to work, then when i went to put it in park (not hard or slamming or anything out of the ordinary) it just felt disconnected... and wouldnt actually shift
where is the connection in the engine bay, maybe it came disconnected from there?
well it did come disconnected from the engine bay.. the shift cable eyelet on the end dry rotted and came off the transaxle manual lever... do i need to replace the whole cable or can i just replace the end that broke?
Thats what you need, I just got done pulling out all my auto stuff. Cable is kinda a pain to get out, just take out the center console and remove the cable from the shifter assembly and pull it through the interior side under the carpet. I still have my auto cable if you are interested in it PM me and we can work something out.
id rather just buy it new, the reason this one failed is because it was old and the plastic rotted...
one question i do have tho: does the end just snap onto the gear selector, or how does it make that connection?
My 97 needs a new cable for the same reason. I really donlt want to deal with this. I have it were I can still use it, but I have to be easy with it.

Yeah I zip tied mine at first. That lasted about 2 minutes. When you move the shifter the zip tie slides off. Mine is pretty much hovering over the pin it connects to, and works.

Yeah it should just snap on. May take a little bit to get it on there, but it will pop in place.
the exaust metled my cable and it came ouf of the housing and created this problem as well i just wrapped it with electrical than heat tape and call it good for another 6 months lol im lazy to change it
