Oil in Intake....2004 Sunfire...Options
Saturday, October 09, 2010 9:39 AM
Hello! Im new on here. My wife has a 2004 sunfire (90000 miles)and its draining oil into the intake from the valve cover breather tube. Ive been looking around and from what Ive found is that there is a separator or pcv inside the valve cover. Before I pull the valve cover, is this a replaceable part inside the valve cover or does it just need cleaned. Ive also read that people have put something on the line like a separator or catch can to catch the oil before it goes into the intake and then into the engine, coating everything in it with burnt crap.

No, the PVC valve is not replaceable.

You have 3 options:
1. You can leave it alone and deal with the oil in the intake. It doesn't hurt anything. Just make sure you clean it once in awhile.
2. You can install an oil catch can. Search for it on here, not sure how to do it myself.
3. You can vent it straight into the air. Depending on your local laws, this can either b illegal, or not. I'm not sure if it's illegal where I am, but I did it anyway when I installed an intake. This is done by installing the little breather filter. Search eBay, or get one locally. I know Advance Auto sells them.

If I install a breather filter won't it become soaked in oil?

Well, I've had my breather filter on for about 2 months now, and it's not soaked in oil yet, and I had a decent amount of oil in my intake tube as well.

You have to clean it just like you clean an aftermarket filter. Whenever you go to clean your air filter, take the breather off, and clean that one too.

Most of the little breather filters are washable and reusable.

I would think that oil is the reason the throttle body is getting gummed up. My cougar, now given is a totally different engine but same principle, had a layer of crap in the upper intake manifold and the lower intake manifold where the secondaries are from the recirculation of this crap so thats why Im not so sure it doesnt hurt anything. Im gonna try the breather on there and if that doesnt work Ill throw a catch can on it. It just seems like a poor design IMO.

How much oil?

I was at the junkyard recently and was pulling parts off a Eco it had a good half a quart of oil in the intake manifold, that is not good.

Not a half quart but close. For the life of me I dont know why GM would design something like that. Oh yeah so I can't fix it myself LOL. I was thinking about pulling the valve cover and seeing whats in there that keeps the oil from going in the intake but the gasket is 22 bucks and I can probably buy a catch can for not much more and solve the problem for sure.
