ok guys so my fuel gauge stopped working last week. i put in a new battery since mine was shot anyway and it worked for about a day. then went back to saying i had 2 full tanks haha wtf. so after some research i found out from 02 to 03 gm used cheap stepper motors. (for those that don't know what a stepper motor is, its what turns the gas, temp, speed, and rpm needles in your instrument cluster) so after some more research i found out that gm is charging people anywhere from 300 to 700 to fix the problem. WTF!!! so back to more research...i finally found a few step by step processes on how to fix it with about 35 to 40 dollars and maybe 2 hours of your time. i found a guy on eabay that sells them for 2.50 a piece so i ordered 4 (came to $15.?? with shipping). even though only the gas guage was messed up i figured why not replace them all so i never have to do this again. well the motors got here this morning so i went to radio shack to get a soldering iron and solder. basically you pull off the dash like your putting in a new radio then you pull the cluster out, take it apart. you push the needles counter clock wise until they stop then put down a piece of tape and mark where it stopped. then you keep turning them until they break lose and you pry the needle up while moving it counter clock wise. then you flip it over desolder the old motor and solder the new one in. after they are all in you put the needles back on in the 12 o clock position and turn them counter clock wise until they are at them ark you made on the tape. assemble the cluster and put everything back together and wallahh no more 2 full tanks. i just finished about a half hour ago, went and filled my tank up and BAM, the gas gauge was right on point. then i drove around and watched the temp guage, and BAM, right on point. then turned on my gps and cruised around the city streeys and the freeway and BAM, the speed was dead on. o and so were the rpms.
