Reset engine light?
Thursday, February 03, 2011 2:30 PM
I have a 97 cavalier that the engine light came on. I went to Autozone and Advanced Auto to double check the error codes. I replaced the EGR valve and Throttle Position Sensor because that is what they told me the error code was. After replacing the parts the light is still on, I unplugged the positive terminal to the battery for about 10 minutes and the light is still on. So I read online that I need to unplug the negative terminal, tried that and the light is still on.

97 cavalier
2.2 liter

Any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

The CEL should clear after three startups of the engine. If it does not clear, you either an issue with the ECU itself, or a bad sensor.

Awe man, I must have some more problems then. I have restarted it more than three times now. This sucks because the car runs and drives fine. I need to fix the error codes so I can pass emissions and buy new tags for the car.

thanks for the reply!

unhooking the battery will reset it, i usually just pull the ecm fuse under the hood, its a 10 amp iirc. If it's still on after that, somethings still wrong.

Get the guys where you bouht the parts to erase the codes( or at autozone), if they come back you must find out why maybe wiring or conector issues.

I guess I will run the car back up to the auto parts place tomorrow and ask them to check the codes again and see what they say.
thanks everybody!
