Brake Lights and Blinkers Out
Saturday, February 05, 2011 10:36 PM
A couple days ago, I tried starting my car and there was no power whatsoever, no interior light, no radio, nothing, I pulled the key out, and a couple of my dash lights lit up, when I put the key back in and turned it, they went off and there was still no power. After inserting and removing the key a few times, I heard a loud pop and suddenly everything was working normally except my brake lights, hazards, and turn signals. I checked the fuse which was blown, replaced it, and it worked for the blinkers, but blew again when I pressed the brake pedal.

I looked around under the dash and everything around the brake pedal looks fine, what should I be checking specifically?

I would check all of the bracke lights sockets for corrosion also the wiring there īs probaly a short somewhere.

Bad ground? My friend's Altima was wierd like this. Her lights were like ours(brake lights are same lights just brighter).....but with her car, her normal lights worked fine but when you pressed the brake, one got brighter(normal) but the other one just went out...ended up being a bad ground somewhere

I don't see how a bad ground for the brake lights would cause all the weird things I saw though. I'll check for corrosion, and replace if necessary, but it's still weird to me.

Keep the ideas coming.
Thanks.

Actually bad grounds can cause all sorts of goofy things. Check the main grounds, there is one under the battery on the battery box. Im not sure where the ground is for the tail light systems. But as stated before there is a short somewhere causing you to blow fuses. I would also try to remove your brake switch, and try and hot wire the lights to come on ad see if it blows the fuses. If not then either your brake switch is bad or the short is before that. If so, then you know its behind the switch and the switch is good. Could also be your headlight switch. I have seen those cause all kinds of issues also. Either way, check the sockets also, and see if there is any kind of corrosion and if there is, remove that, because that can very well be shorting out the light system. Goodluck!
