SES light PO442, Evap. Leak. 2000 Cavalier

hey guys,

i need some help with a check engine error code p0442 (evap leak)

i took it into a GM dealer to get looked at they diagnosed the problem and heres what they wrote on my work order

"Cause: Evap leak P0442. check condition of fuel system - found that will require fuel lines/brake lines and a fuel filler neck. aprox $1500 to repair. not worth fixing"

i was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to proceed, there is only 130000KM on the car, would it be wise to try and fix myself? I’m far from a mechanic but i've fairly handy.
If anyone has some suggestions it would be greatly appreciated!

Roy

OBD Code P0442

Check that link for info about the code.

That code is associated with a SMALL leak.

Them asking you to replace most of your fuel system sounds ludicrous, and it sounds like a typical shop telling you what you 'need'. It is an EVAP leak, which shouldn't require replacement of most of your fuel system unless you are in an area with lots of snow and salt, which could cause major corrosion of the filler neck and fuel lines.

I would change gas caps and get them to clear the code.

Where in Canada are you? You can go to a lordco or Mopac and i believe they clear codes for free.

PM me if it comes back. I have 135,000KM on my car, and used to throw p0440 and p0442 codes a year ago.

Forgot to add,

If you have a locking gas cap, that could be the problem. We have seen them leak all the time, and they are a B*tch for those codes.

well i live in ontario, they said that my fuel/brake lines are heavily rusted... if it turns out not to be the cap, is it a problem trying to find the source of the leak?

thanks!

Wow, that's crazy how fast they rusted after 130,xxxKM.

I am in Calgary, with about the same mileage, and driven every winter. I thought they salted the roads in alberta more than they do in ontario?

Well, if the fuel lines are really rusted, that poses a problem and I would get it replaced. That quote is a good amount of money. If that happened to me, I would pick up a new filler neck, and run all new braided AN lines and fittings from the back to the fuel rail

It's just weird that it happened so fast....wow.

That sucks
