Friday, May 20, 2011 8:15 AM
Anyone out there know why my 1989 Cavalier with the 2.8 V6 would keep stalling when i drive it? and no its not a manual its a auto. I have replaced the following:

Crank sensor
Ignition module
TTC solenoid
Checked fuel pump and filter
New plugs and wires
Torque converter

It runs perfect but stalls after i drive it for awhile. Only when i am stopped and push on the gas it stalls and then its hard to start???? Its driving me nuts. Today im replacing the wire harness that goes from the ignition module to the crank sensor. I will take all the help i can get.

PLEASE HELP ME

Check out this site http://www.wellsve.com Then click on wells tech and it will high light, then scroll over to the counterpoint newsletter, click that, next click on the volume 2 1998 and it will give a section on checking the tps.It might be your tps is a issue,BUT doubt that at this point.Next it sounds like your EGR might be sticking and will choke the engine running or taking off etc.Not sure where it is located exactly on the 2.8 but if it has vacumm lines going to it(disconnect them) and see if that clears the problem. If it only has a electrical plug in,remove the egr and clean the filthe inside the pintal (metal) that moves up and down and any carbon where it bolts up to as well.Being the items you listed you missed a often overlooked item for symtoms of a blocked egr or sticking egr pintal. It will kill the power, idle, and running normal hot or cold.Check out the EGR first and then if no change check ur tps with a multimeter for proper gradual resistance up and down.I am leaning hard to egr right now.If I come up with something else I will share.Ok

I could write a book on this problem, but I'll make this short because i'm too slow typing. After around 700 bucks worth of sensors pumps and modules, and a lot of sweat and bad language . I heard about the peck test ; and this is how it works. LOCATE your computer ecm whatever . behind the glovebox shiney metal box, with a couple big plugs with a lot of wires. YOU have to do this when the car is stalled. While trying to start the engine peck on the box with a medium sized wrench is what i used . IFit fires up replace it and you are fixed. You willhave to take the sim. card out of your old computer and put inthe new one. They will change these out for you at your parts store if you ask. Hope this helps ,wish i had learned sooner.
