So i have a 2000 Cavalier, it has no brake lights let me rephrase, when the running lights are on the rear lights are lit, when brakes are applied, only the 3 light comes on, the tail lights do nothing, any ideas?
Oh and the blinkers work, i heard that it is most likely the turn single switch is this true?
So,
When your headlights are OFF, your tail lights are lit? Are they dim or bright?
I would not blame the turn signal switch, as your brake circuit should not run through it.
When headlights/even running lights are on the bulb is lit, (dual filament bulb) When they are off bulb is off, the 2nd filament is for the blinker and brake light it self. When the breaks are applied the 3rd brake light come on but the main taillights do not. The blinks work fine weather lights are on or off. The turn signal switch controls the whole lighting system. But was unsure if anyone else has had this issue before, thank you for the response by the way.
Check your fuses
Some people have brain storms, others light drizzles. And then there are those that have droughts.
I would suggest changing out the stop light switch mounted on the back of the brake pedal. However being your 3rd brake light works when the brakes are applied rules that out.I on the other hand might suggest replacing ONE socket with a new one,and look at the seats inside where the bulb makes contact to see if there is poor contact, heat spots, melting.Gm sockets kinda suck around ur yr model, and other models as well. That is what comes to mind.I can tell you my mothr in law had a 98 malibu had issues ALL the time with those shi!! sockets, had to replace the whole assembly. And yeah it is different than your cavs tail bulb assembly. But cheap parts.I would try at least one to see.
Thanks for everyone's input i changed the whole blinker assembly at the steering column and everything works again! That assembly controls taillights hazards light everything.
