I know this has been covered, but I'm still not totally comfortable doing this until I am 100% sure.
I have a 95 cavalier 2.2. I got the Z24 bumper with the fogs from the junk yard. Also in the process I took the fog/dimmer switch.
My question, How do I install my fogs so they work with the stock switch? It has 3 wire, where exactly does each wire need to be run too? Could someone go into detail on what relay I need and what goes into each pin? This would be extremely helpful.
I'm thinking I'll just put an inline fuse on, and power them direct from the battery, is this doable? This way I can turn them on with high beams, or even if the car is off. It also seems easier then splicing into another line anyways.
Thanks guys.
You can do that... somewhere floating around the forum is a downloadable PDF of the 95-99 cav/fire haynes manual that has wiring diagrams and etc in it... I believe the best way for you do do this would be to use a relay, and power from the low beams... low beam positive wire to be exact.. (they both have positve current when the lights are off) I believe the dash is a straight on off switch (2 wires) and the third wire is a ground to run the little orange light in the switch to tell you when the switch is on.
I'd say wire up the switch normally with power in/ground/power out.. then run your power out up to a relay, and use the power from switch as the trigger for the relay, with low beam positive through the relay to the fog light wires, then the grounds for the fogs just go to ground. This way the power for your lights is being pulled from a circuit meant for lights, and you don't have so much power moving through your trigger wire to the relay. Hope this helps, you might also look at the headlight mod faq in the exterior section (i believe)
can someone explain more about the relay?
From what I understand the switch has 3 wires
BLACK: ground
YELLOW: lamp/switch tied to instant LPS fuse <-- what does this mean?
YELLOW/BLACK: to foglamp coil. <-- what does this mean?
also, It sounds like I cant draw power direct from the batter, I think I read somewhere it gives too much power tot he fogs. (8 extra amps) is this true?
alright, I understand the 8 extra amps, that's only if i don't use a relay. but still don't understand the rest for sure.
So after more research, I believe I know what eachbwire is for on the switch. I just need to know what goes into each pin on the relay. There are no consistencies from what I have read.
Most all relays have either 4 or 5 pins and most have the diagram/numbers on them to show what is what.
Pins 85 and 86 are where your wire from the dash switch goes, it doesn't matter which pin it goes to, one must be a positive and one must be a ground.
30 is where the positive foglight wire goes. Pin 30 is switched between 87 and 87a, it is normally on 87a, this can be used for switching things on and off with the fogs, so if fogs were off some other light might be on and vice versa.
Now 87 is where you would want your positive wire that will power your foglights, You can use any positive wire you want, I would suggest the low beam positive wire since its in the same general area your working, and you will have power from it all the time... Just don't forget to shut your fogs off and run the battery down.
K awesome. I just wired them all up. Quite a gross wiring job though
but they look good
from the outside
Nice, do they work how you wanted them to?
