Car randomly shut off
Friday, August 05, 2011 12:20 PM
Yesterday driving along, come to a red light, stops normally. Let off the brake to go, and my gas is locked up. Put my foot back on the brake, locked as well. I put it in park, shut it off, and try to restart my car but the ignition is now locked as well. After about 10 minutes, it started right up. After some inspection, it appeared i had no oil. Just had it changed in may, or at least i thought. My question here, in an 04 or any cavalier for that matter, anyone ever heard of this? And does the no oil contribute to why this happened? Is there some type of sensor to shut the car off when the oil is gone? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All that locking up etc, didnt hae anything to do with no oil, but the vehicle will shut off if the O/P is to low on GMs. Wont cause a no start, will cause a no start/stall though

The J's do not have a no start or stall from low oil pressure.

Actually they do, the oil pressure switch is tied into the fuel pump. Found that out when I eliminated my oil pressure sender and added a aftermarket on a standalone unit. Mine was a 95 then though not sure if the OP'S year was close or if all j's have it though.

95 does not shut it off...mine is still plugged in but the sensor is not in the block...been like that for a year now starts and runs fine
