2.4L 97 cavalier will not cranck after changed starter.

Ok well I bought the cavalier just last Thursday for 500.00 the girl I got it from said it wouldn't start. I got the car started and drove it half way to my destination then it stopped running. I bought new plugs and the boots car still wouldn't start so we changed the fuel pressure regulator valve sine we could only smell gas from the throttle body and the exhaust, once that was changed the starter gave out which is where were having the issues now. Got the new starter in but now we have power to everything but it will not turn over at all. You can here the fuel pump kick on and that's it. Please help me I so frustrated with the car at this point...... thanks for any and all help.

now the trouble shooting begins : Make sure u got spark check the coils or IND. PSI test done on the fuel pump make sure its not weak / Double check your plugs are tight. Also on your starter its a 2 wire hook up did u cross any wires?. Also any check engine light being displayed?. thats a first things to start with. Also could have a none bad O - ring on one of the injectors.

Checked the spark. The fuel pump kicks on really loud so didn't think about it being weak. Double checked the plugs and I got the tiny red ingnation wire on the small bolt and the positive on the big bolt.. the check engine light is on but the cat has been cut off the car before I got it so I figure that's atleast one reason its on.how can I tell if it has a bad o ring? Just by any cracks?

Check fuel pump, noise does not indicate fuel pressure....

Does it crank n sound like its trying? i had a issue after my motor swap where my crank swnsor plugs were slightly i mean barely noticibly off. and since not making proper contact it wouldnt start. could be a bad crank postion sensor to the driverside of starter.

Update: got it running the timing is good and the crank sensor is good but the motor is no longer good I just blew it up. Now to figure out do I rebuid the 2.4 which I have been told has many issues and being my first 2.4 I really hate it. Or do I put the 2.2 in it which I have never had any issues with them or do a v6 swap? Any inputs

Well its starting or was and just blew out a crap load of white smoke so we were sure its blown bought a compression tester to double check. Also can anyone tell me how I test the psi on the fuel pump? If you start the car and pump the gas and keep on it the car will stay running but if u let off the gas it will not idle anymore.
