ABS Sensor or Wheel Speed Sensor
Saturday, February 18, 2012 10:00 AM
So today I scanned my computer because my abs light, and trac off light are on and it says I have a bad wheel speed sensor. So now their is easy the abs sensor or an actual wheel speed sensor. The difference in the parts is about 50 bucks so which one could it be?

ABS sensor is the wheel speed sensor isn't it? The sensor for your gauge is called the VSS.

you might need a hub im not sure if cavs have the hubs or not. but if it is just the sensor i believe it would be the wheel speed sensor. Which sensor is in the code? LF RF RR LF or you might just have one in the back some where.

Front code, you should do sensor and harness, they have a problem with water intrusion. Rear sensor is the hub.

The front sensors bolt onto the knuckle and I think they are 8mm bolts. The reads you will have to take off the drum and part dissassemble the shoes and springs, then I think its a t55 bolt(4) and 15mm nuts holding it on. Double check on the torx bolts before you buy a socket though.

what was the fix to this

i have a 99 cavalier thats showing high resistance on the wiring to the front passenger side sensor. Sensor resistance shows about 1700 which I believe is normal

The actual wiring seems corroded when I spliced it at the sensor end

splicing into the connector end is a short term repair method. Any soldered or crimped repair cannot bend tighly enought to withstand the constant flexing that occurs at the sensor end. Proper repair should be a repair harness that splices in at a straight run of the wiring. Abs wiring in not normal copper stranded wire. Called, angel hair, is it finer and can withstand constant flexing.
