Hello Everyone,
I need to replace the front wheel bearing on my '05 Cavalier. The bearing kit has a seal in it with a diagram on where to install it.
I am just wondering what is the purpose of that seal? None of my other FWD cars had a similar seal.
Is it to protect the toothed gear of the ABS sensor from corrosion? (My car does not have ABS.)
Incidentally, the factory service manual does not mention any word about a seal in there.
Thanks, Peter
the bearing probably has more than one application. I've done some different models that had the seal I'm assuming if it didn't come with the seal from the factory; it doesn't need one now.
I have seen this when i replaced mine. i simply installed it as it seems to be a addition to the product to help prolong it as it will help keep water, dirt, grim etc outta the bearings in the hub. kinda like free insurance. and hey it take you what 1minute to add that while replacing the bearings. heck even the cheap ass $20 dollar one came with a seal. i say install it and its easy to do so.

Well, it does not seem to be a one minute additional installation time!
For the seal to install one needs to take the spindle housing/strut, while it looks that the bearing can be installed with the strut in the car.
Any comments?
Peter
You need to remove the axle shaft nut, your old hub/bearing, pop out your ball joint, pull the spindle away (turning the steering wheel the toward the opposite side that you're working helps), clean inside the spindle install seal and installation is reverse.
I think he meant after everything was apart.

Thanks for the comments! Yes, that is what I thought needs to be done.
Still, what is the reason for that seal? Is that ABS ring inside the sealed area?
Thanks, Peter
Its a dust and dirt deflector for the bearing... Install it, it will prolong the life of the seal on the bearing and thus prolong the life of the bearing itself.

The bearing (original) failed in less than 50K.
My other cars, VWs and Audis, never had a wheel bearing failure. None of them has such a seal.
Peter
I had 3to bearings go out until they started sending the seal with the new hub. My car didn't come with it originally but it has made a big difference on how long the bearings last.

Yes what jason said once all aprt is what i ment. i would go the extra mile and add tgat since will prolong the life of.it. the abs ring is the toothed gear on tha axle its self and the abs sensor is mounted on the knuckle aa a fyi.
Hello Everyone,
I did replace the bearing, now I can listen to the radio
I watched this video for inspiration:

Incidentally, my car did not have the seal I was asking originally, and I did not install the one that came with the bearing.
I just hope that this bearing (Federal Mogul) will last longer than 50K.
Thanks, Peter
